How to Deal with Breast Cancer

January 7th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Family Health

A breast cancer diagnosis can be scary and overwhelming. There is so much information to process about your disease, possible treatments and side effects from treatments. You have to sort through the information in an orderly way and not get overwhelmed. You have to have faith that things will work out and that you will find the right treatment for you. Here are some suggestions on how to cope with your diagnosis.

The best thing you can do is educate yourself about breast cancer and all the possible treatments. Your doctor will discuss in detail with you your options and make his recommendations. It is important that you look at what he presents to you but also do some of your own research as well. The more you know about your choices the more control you will feel like you have over your breast cancer. The sooner you make a decision on your treatment options, the better because early treatment increases your chances of surviving breast cancer.

You should definitely follow your doctor’s instructions but you can also do things on your own to fight your breast cancer. One thing you can try is changing your diet to include more omega-3 fatty acids and plenty of fresh produce. Also, you can take vitamins and supplements that might help. Make sure you have done your homework and know what you are taking when it comes to supplements, though.

Alternative medicines may offer relief and can include yoga or relaxation therapy. These treatments may not fight the disease itself but they can help you stay relaxed and calm and reduce your suffering. When you are less stressed, you’ll have more energy and your body will be able to concentrate on fighting your breast cancer. These alternative treatments will also make you feel more in control and give you a sense of purpose.

You will need all the support you can get from your friends and family members. It is important to let others comfort you and help you at this difficult time. You can take your mind off the breast cancer by participating in activities with your loved ones and enjoying life. Your loved ones want to help you and make this hard time easier on you so let them.

There are many support groups out there full of people who are going through the exact same thing as you so they can be helpful as well. Unlike your loved ones, these people can truly relate to your problems and issues. Not only can you make new friends and get support, you can share information with each other about doctors, treatments and ways to improve your health. Many of these groups have a facilitator who is trained and knows how to best manage the group so everyone gets something out of the experience.

Above all, you must stay positive. Think about all the breast cancer survivors out there who have been through what you are going through and are living normal, healthy lives.
