June 17th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Family Health

Because of popular media, you might think that chemicals are the only solution to treating anxiety problems. Then again, there are still a good number of us who prefer the natural ways to curing illnesses. Allergies and other side effects are a result for taking in herbs and drugs. There is still another option proven to be effective: meditation.

For such a long time, meditation has been practiced for religious and spiritual purposes. Recently, there are a lot of studies being done how meditation can be a solution for treating health problems. The results are positive: it affects metabolism, heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure and brain chemistry. In simple terms, it creates what we call “relaxation response.”

This relaxation response is very helpful to those who suffer from anxiety disorders. It places the patient into a more serene state of mind and battles distress. It gives a sense of peace and relief.

Not only does it provide immediate comfort but it gives us the awareness we need that helps us be aware of our mental functions that causes anxiety. Because it gives us greater control of our thoughts, it helps us combat negative ideas that stimulate anxiety. Because of such, meditation is there for the long term aid.

Different Kinds of Meditation to Control Anxiety

Different types of meditation exists and all of them can be categorized into two:

  • Meditation based on concentration - This kind of meditation focuses on that which does not need conscious thought. The main objective is to clear the mind from everything and to concentrate on breathing patterns, a tangible object or do chants.
  • Meditation that fills the mind - Mindful meditation on the overhand focuses on one’s thoughts and emotions without being overcome by them. It’s objective is to make the mind at peace. This kind of meditation is very good at treating obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Both kinds of meditation is effective to people with anxiety. A lot of people will find that both methods, especially alternating between them, produces the best results.

Meditating 101

There are those who go to mentors to learn how to meditate. This is especially good for people who have difficulty focusing or needs to have outside motivation to complete the sessions. Some resort to audio or video materials readily available so that they could learn at the comforts of their own home.

The good thing about meditation is that it doesn’t carry any health risk. It is a good alternative for anyone who has anxiety. It can be used on top of other treatments or just by itself. Whether you have a serious anxiety disorder or just simply stressed, meditation is there to help.

Healthy Power Snacks Kids Will Love

June 15th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Health Research

Like many kids, your child probably comes home hungry after school and wants sweets and other unhealthy snacks. Kids need snacks because they are growing so fast but they need healthy snacks, not snacks full of sugar. The snacks you give your child need to provide him with the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients his growing bodies need.

If you have healthy snacks that taste good available, your child will eat them. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Raisins - Raisins are a healthy and tasty snack that you can buy in prepackaged servings for an easy snack choice. The sweet taste of raisins will make your child want to eat them and he will get a lot of vitamins and iron from this snack.
  • Apples - Apples are a popular fruit with kids of all ages. It is healthier for your child to eat the whole apple including the peel so he gets the most nutrients from the fruit. Even a peeled apple is still a good healthy power snack, though. You can always combine the apple with peanut butter, cheese or yogurt for something different.
  • Yogurt, granola and fruit parfait - Yogurt itself is a good snack but adding fruit and granola makes it even more appealing to children. This is a low fat snack full of protein and vitamins.
  • Trail mix - The combination of fruit and nuts is not only healthy but tastes good and is fun to eat.
  • Ants on a log - You can make celery interesting by combing celery, peanut butter and raisins to make a fun and attractive snack for kids of all ages.
  • Fruit and cheese - You can make a fun fruit and cheese snack by spearing grapes, pineapple and more along with different kinds of cheese on a toothpick or other type of skewer.
  • Carrots - Carrots are a vegetable that most children enjoy eating. If you have baby carrots in your fridge you can give your child a quick and healthy snack especially if you have some healthy dip to go with it.
  • Fruit snacks - The chewy fruit snacks they sell at the grocery store are actually a healthy power snack that kids love to eat. Just give your child the low sugar ones with a lot of vitamin C.
  • Pizza bagels - This is a great snack for the bigger appetites that your child sometime has. All you need to do is cover a bagel with tomato sauce and cheese and toast in a toaster oven or microwave the bagel. You can put some veggies on there if your child will eat them.

Left to their own devices, children will often choose snacks high in fat and sugar. Healthy power snacks do not have to be a chore to make or to get your child to eat. If you keep some of these healthy power snacks in the house, you will find your child eating them without you having to tell him to. Get rid of those greasy and sugar filled snacks in your home and get some healthy power snacks instead.

Dieting to Speed Up Metabolism

June 14th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Family Health

Losing weight is simply the process of burning more calories than what you consume. A lot of weight loss plans fail to take note of this important, yet simple, detail. They usually focus more on the consumption part of dieting your way to a supposedly healthier and slimmer you.

A lot of people resort to skipping meals just to avoid consuming too many calories. Starving yourself is not the answer! This isn’t the wises thing to do because when trying to trim down, you shouldn’t deprive your body of nutrients. You starve your body when you do this and it actually slows down your metabolism or even stops it. This means you won’t be able to lose calories. The trick to this is coming up with a diet plan that speeds up your metabolism so you can burn calories faster.

When trying to speed up your metabolism, one of the most important steps is eating within half an hour after getting up in the morning. This jolts your metabolism into starting early. Having different kinds of foods that your body can burn throughout the rest of your day is also important. You should have at least a cup of complex carbs, 3 ounces of lean protein and of course, a glass of water.

You also have to remember to keep your metabolism going by munching on small meals every four hours. To maximize what you can burn it actually best to eat every couple of hours to three hours. This make you satisfy your hunger as soon as it sets in, which is a key trick to losing weight. Do no allow your body to feel starved or deprived of nutrition because it will slow your metabolism down - you don’t want to do that if you want to lose weight.

It also should be understood that the small meals you munch on through out the day should be healthy of course. The best forms of snacks are protein-filled snacks that force your metabolism to burn more than what you eat. You can also opt to eat granola bars and such, like healthy peanuts and different kinds of grains, that keep you energized for the rest of the time that you are up and about.

The main meals you have for the rest of your 24 hours should consist of a wide variety of healthy foods that can stimulate your metabolism to burn more and keep going at full speed. You can begin with at least 3 ounces of lean protein for every major meal. Eating one serving of a complex carb that takes longer to burn and leaves you satisfied longer is also a smart idea. You can use something like brown rice that is both delicious and healthy. You can also never go wrong with vegetables. Eat as much vegetables as you can. The upside to this is that you can pig out on vegetables and not gain weight at all.

This is basically all you have to do to lose weight. If you manage to “train” your metabolism to burn at full speed you will lose weight faster than you can notice. This will make your body burn at maximum efficiency and speed. You will be able to literally just feel and look leaner and lighter.

Relieve Anxiety with a Massage

June 5th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Family Health

People have been getting massages for centuries as a way to treat different kinds of illnesses.  And anyone who’s ever gotten one can attest to the fact that it can relieve you off stress after a hard day’s work.  It’s no wonder that massages are being used today to deal with anxiety.

Getting therapeutic massages has its physical benefits.  Getting massages regularly are recommended for athletes who get injured, patients suffering from chronic pain and people who get injuries due to stress.  Massages are also use to treat patients of fibromyalgia.  Nowadays, doctors are now recommending massages for people suffering from anxiety related cases.

Most of the time massages are combined with other kinds of treatments but not as a replacement treatment.  You can use massage as a complement to anxiety medication.  This is also a great treatment for those who are cautious of getting addicted to medications.  When you combine, massage with herbs and therapy you can have a treatment for anxiety without the danger of chemicals.

Rubbing Down the Anxiety

Anxiety causes the muscles in our body to stiffen.  The stiffening of muscles it what can cause pain or injury.  When this happens, the more a person feels anxiety apart from what they are currently experiencing.  Sadly this happens a lot but not anymore.  By getting a massage, your muscles can be loosened, which can temporarily relieve anxiety.

Going for a massage also decreases your stress hormone levels.  A stress hormone affects both the body and the mind and is the main cause of anxiety.  Although there is no solid proof of this, the important thing is its positive effects.  Getting a massage regularly can decrease your stress hormone levels which alleviates anxiety in the long run.

It’s Time for a Massage

To get a massage, doctors recommend that their patients visit a licensed massage therapist.  These therapists are knowledgeable on what kind of massage is good for you and their experience will benefit you.  Sometimes getting a massage doesn’t seem practical.  Aside from the fact that your insurance might not cover it, having the time can also be a problem.

There are other ways to get a massage without going to a therapist.  You can have someone give you a massage.  You can ask your spouse to give you a massage before you go to bed, which can benefit you both since it can bring you closer as a couple. Getting a massage chair is a great idea.  Although it won’t be as satisfying, you can also give yourself a massage.  There is danger involved if you try to get a massage at home, provided you don’t have any serious medical conditions, which is why getting a massage from a therapist is advisable.

Even if massages don’t cure anxiety by itself, it does benefit you in the long run in controlling anxiety attacks.  Remember to ask your doctor if getting a massage is the best therapy for you.

All About Juicing

May 17th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Health Research

Juice has been made by individuals for hundreds of years. Now, many people simply buy their fruit and vegetable juice from the grocery store. However, more and more people are worried about getting things they don’t want in the juice like pesticides and other chemicals so they are making their own juice.

Juicing is Good For You

When you do the juicing yourself, you are only putting in what you want in the juice. You can be sure you won’t have an allergic reaction to an ingredient and can even use home-grown produce to be extra sure you don’t get any pesticides or chemicals. The juice you make yourself will be 100% fresh and pure.

Freshly juiced fruit produces juice full of good things like minerals, amino acids and vitamins. The fact that they are naturally added to the juice by juicing fresh fruit instead of through a process in a factory means you are getting nutrients in a better form than from store bought juice.

Drinking fresh juice actually gives you more vitamins and nutrients than eating the fruit whole by itself. A glass of carrot juice will consist of about 16 ounces of carrots so it is very concentrated. Who eats that many carrots in a single day?

How to Start Juicing

The essential tool for juicing is a quality juicer. You can find different kinds of juicers and each is good in its own way. Here is some information about your options:

  • Centrifugal juicers - These juicers make juice by shredding or grating the fruit at a fast speed. The juice comes out of the fruits and vegetables as they are torn apart. The juice goes into a container and the vegetable pulp is kept separate. The cons of these juicers are they are not easy to keep clean and that oxidation can occur and make nutrients less effective.
  • Masticating juicers - These juicers work by slowly grating or shredding the fruit or vegetables, which releases the juice as the pulp is pressed down. They are a little more complicated to operate but oxidation is not a problem with these juicers.
  • Press juicers - The way these juicers work is by shredding or crushing the fruit or vegetables and the pulp is pressed, which releases the juice. These produce juice very high in nutrients.

After you decide on a juicer, you are ready to try to make some fresh juice. It is best to keep it simple at first and use something like an apple or an orange that will produce tasty juice on its own. You want to get the operation of the juicer down before you try juice with too many ingredients.

After you have some practice, you can find recipes for all kinds of different juices you want to try. You can find juices specifically geared towards helping with medical problems like heart disease or digestive problems and juices that help your brain function improve. Your juicer may have a recipe book that came with the machine that you can work from or you can search online for juice recipes. You can even make up your own as you go.

Fresh juice is something your whole family will enjoy with any meal. You can give them a tasty drink that also provides a ton of nutrients. You won’t want to go back to juice from the store once you try juicing.

Identifying the Symptoms of Arthritis

January 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Health Research

We all have aches and pains especially in our joints as we get older. Many people think that this means they have arthritis, which may or may not be true. You need to get a proper diagnosis for your joint pain so that you can get a treatment that will work for you. You need to visit your doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Pain in the joints and even swelling in these areas is a common arthritis symptom. This pain can be a little annoying for some people, but it can be debilitating for others. One thing is certain: arthritis symptom can be persistent. The pain can occur while you are sitting down doing nothing or while you are active. The painful swelling and redness that can occur at the joints can be so bad that you just can hardly get around if you don’t take care of the problem.

Sometimes, people with arthritis will have bone deposits on their hands or other affected body parts. These look like lumps and form around the joints. They stick out and look odd.

Another arthritis symptom is loss of range of motion in certain joints. The joints become stiff and difficult to move or bend. This can make walking and using your hands and other body parts difficult and painful if it is not properly treated. As this symptom of arthritis progresses, it can significantly affect your ability to perform daily tasks or go about your daily activities.

Symptoms that you may not commonly associate with arthritis include tiredness, weakness, moodiness and weight loss. These are not joint problems but are caused by arthritis all the same.

Arthritis is not just one disease that is the same for everyone. With as many as 100 different kinds of arthritis, it is important to see your doctor and find out what kind you have and how it is best treated. You may have the same kind of arthritis as someone else but you may have an entirely different set of symptoms.

A doctor’s visit to check you for arthritis will probably consist of a health history, an examination and X-rays. All this is done to properly diagnose your arthritis and make sure there are no other problems that could be causing the symptoms.

While over-the-counter pain medicine may alleviate some of your symptoms, it isn’t a permanent solution to your problem. Your doctor can tell you what you should be taking and prescribe something for you if necessary. Your doctor may also recommend therapy depending on how advanced your arthritis is.

Arthritis is painful and difficult to deal with. It is one disease that science has not found any cure for. If you notice symptoms of arthritis, don’t ignore it. Go see your doctor and find out what you can do to treat your symptoms.

Understanding Arthritis

January 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Health Research

We all either have experienced or know a loved one who has experienced problems with arthritis. The main symptom of arthritis is joint pain which can range from moderate to severe. What is confusing is why arthritis affects some people and not others.

Scientists really don’t understand what makes some people susceptible to arthritis while others don’t have problems with it at all. It is not something you can catch from another person like the common cold. A joint disorder, arthritis comes on slowly and can get worse with time. There are many different kinds of arthritis, all with slightly different causes.

Arthritis is associated with many different risk factors, and the more arthritis risk factors you have, the higher the chances of you developing arthritis. These may not be the sole cause of your problem but they contribute.

As you get older, your risk of developing arthritis gets higher. This is largely because your joints are aging and wearing, which may increase your symptoms. The natural aging of your joints and the damage that occurs may cause arthritis to progress faster than it would otherwise. Arthritis is common among older adults for this reason.

If you are overweight, you are at additional risk for developing arthritis. The extra weight that you carry puts stress on your joints, particularly the weight-bearing joints, and causes damage over time. Losing weight by dieting and exercise will lower your risk for developing arthritis.

If you have a sports injury or something similar, you may be at additional risk for arthritis. Your likelihood of developing arthritis also increases if you’ve previously injured a joint. Take care of any injuries that occur and make sure they heal properly.

There may be a genetic factor with arthritis so you may be at extra risk if you have a family history of the disease. People who have arthritis in their family, especially a close family member, may develop arthritis. If your parents have arthritis, for instance, you’re at risk of developing the disease, although it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will have arthritis. You can lower your risk of developing arthritis later on by taking care of your body right now.

People who participate in athletics and sports are more likely to develop arthritis. This is partially because they are more likely to have joint injuries and other damage to their bodies. The science really only shows a slight connection, though, so it is not safe to assume that all athletes will develop arthritis. If you exercise safely and don’t put too much stress on your body, you should be fine.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is what almost all of us associate with the word arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a more severe form with many of the same symptoms but caused by different factors. With Rheumatoid arthritis, the damage to the joints is caused by your immune system attacking your body from the inside.

If you have arthritis, there is no magic cure. You can find out as much as you can about your condition and possible treatments, though.
