Acid Reflux: Treat it Naturally!
Acid reflux is a condition that can be anywhere from mildly irritating to severely hindering. Either way, it could potentially lead to esophageal cancer, so treatment is very important.
Many types of over the counter and prescription medicines exist for treatment purposes. While they help some people, others receive no relief from the use of the medicine. Side effects come with almost all available varieties. Proton pump inhibitors, the kind of drug generally used for treatment has been shown to make the user more susceptible to pneumonia. Other side effects may include digestion problems and conflict with other medications.
Due to these harsh side effects, many people have looked for healthier, more natural alternatives. Here are some options you can try.
Herbs
Ginger - Ginger is most commonly known for its excellent help with digestion problems. It is also great for acid reflux, as it reduces discomfort and eliminates bacteria that make the condition worse. Use it in a limited quantity, as too much will aggravate the problem.
Bladderwrack - This is one variation of seaweed, which features a stem that can be used for medical purposes. Alginic acid, which is used in manufactured acid reflux drugs, is found in bladderwrack.
Aloe vera - Traditionally, aloe is thought of as a skin treatment, especially sunburn. It also helps with heartburn and can be ingested with pills or liquid several times per day.
Licorice - Licorice has been shown to prevent inflammation and could possibly prevent gastritis and ulcers. It is an antacid and can be consumed in tea form or with pills.
Foods
Sweets - Sugar naturally reduces heartburn, so something sugary can reduce discomfort and fight acid reflux. All foods with low acid and sweet will help, but healthy choices like honeydew, grapes, apples, and pears are best.
Vegetables - Certain vegetables have properties that make them act as an antacid. Try broccoli, avocado, leaf greens, and potatoes.
Avoid certain foods - Some foods trigger increased acid production in the stomach, so it is best to stay away from them. These foods include alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, sour berries, mustard, and citrus fruits.
Through diet and lifestyle changes, acid reflux can be handled without the use of harsh medicines. Natural remedies are very useful and commonly perform as well as their traditional, synthetic counterparts. Also, they can be taken without many adverse effects, and they are often more reasonable, cost wise, than the drugs produced by large corporations. Before beginning a treatment plan, discuss it with a doctor, as certain herbs can clash with other substances you may be taking. Also, a doctor can help optimize a plan for your specific needs.
