Let’s Talk About Fish Oil


In recent years, more studies have been focused on the effects of a diet rich in fish. It has been suggested that fish oil and plain fish reduce the symptoms of cardiovascular disease. The reason fish has this effect is omega-3 acid. The following will explain about this acid, dealing with cardiovascular disease, and preventing it for those who may develop it in the future.

Across the country, cardiovascular disease is a large issue. Soaring rates of obesity and diabetes are in direct correlation to the rise of cardiovascular disease. Strokes are caused by blocked arteries, and heart attacks are caused by clogged coronary arteries. Diet is a major factor in being healthy and preventing serious conditions.

Omega-3 acids are contained at the highest levels in soybeans, canola, plants, fish, and flaxseed. Three types of acid exist: DHA, EPA, and LNA. The beginning two acids are most beneficial to the heart. They are found mostly in fish with a low amount of saturated fat. LNA comes primarily from plants. When dealing with fat, saturated is more harmful than unsaturated.

For best possible results, it is advised that you receive natural omega-3 acid three days a week. Studies suggest that people who eat lots of fish and plants are less likely to develop the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. If heart problems have never occurred, a modified diet is probably the only preventative measure you need.

Even if you have had trouble with cardiovascular disease, eating fish is still advisable. Also, EPA and DHA supplements may be given by your doctor. Before taking any sort of pill or supplement, talk with your doctor about possible effects.

Research suggests that omega-3 acids:

  • Reduce the probability of heart attack causing blood clots
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Slow plaque growth on artery walls
  • Lower triglyceride levels
  • Decreased cardiac arrhythmias levels

It is possible that future research will uncover more benefits of omega-3 acid, but currently we know that fish oil and fish are excellent options for improved heart health.
