Your Health & Multivitamins: Are They All Good for You?

For a long time, we have been informed that a multivitamin a day provides us with adequate nutrition and enhances a healthy lifestyle. They are advertised as being a sort of cure-all that can fight cancer, lower blood pressure, and let us live happier, longer, and healthier lives. There is a wide array of vitamins for every body type, age, lifestyle, and sex. However, never research is suggesting that in addition to being unnecessary, multivitamins may be harmful.

A large issue in regard to multivitamins is that there is no FDA regulation for their ingredients. While the FDA ensures the safety of almost everything we consume, including food and medicine, there is no standard for supplements. There is no person or agency that ensures quality, safety, or purity of the components of the supplement. Vitamins and supplements can be extremely dangerous if made with impure substances or improperly balanced.

With traditional medicines, the production companies are forced to report all possible side effects. Since there is no regulation, multivitamin makers are not required to do this. As a result, they could easily use unsafe ingredients, and the consumer would have no idea. Also, research done on the internet about the supplements may or may not yield correct information.

Certain organizations will review supplements and endorse them with a stamp or other symbol, but this is completely voluntary. Also, be sure to read the fine print, as many labels and wordings can be extremely misleading.

When purchasing a multivitamin, take time to examine the back of the container. While they contain all you need for a day, they may also contain way more than you need. While it may seem healthy it receive 6 times the daily recommended value of something, this is unnecessary and possibly harmful.

Drinking too much fluid can have an adverse affect on your health. Most of the extra water is expelled in the form of urine, which makes extra work for organs such as the kidneys. Even if you find a multivitamin that only contains 100% of everything, food consumption will take you over the daily recommended value for many vitamins.

The best way to receive all your nutrients is naturally, without the aid of a synthetic supplement. Modify your diet so that it is healthier and contains larger amounts of fresh vegetables, omega-3 acids, and fruits. When contained in food, nutrients are absorbed more efficiently and are more effective once inside the body.
