Toxic Body: Food Poisoning

If food poisoning has ever been a problem for you, you know what a burden it can be. Though it is fairly common and many people do not seek medical treatment for it, untreated severe cases can lead to extended hospital stays and possibly even death. Knowledge is power in regards to recognizing and dealing with food poisoning.

Food poisoning is a broad generalization that can encompass many different illnesses that can come from food. Its causes can be bacteria, a virus, or chemicals. Because of the many different cases, symptoms are not always the same. The most common signs are: stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. In worse situations, symptoms can include: fever, chills, bloody stool, and dehydration. If poisoned, the above conditions will begin within 48 hours of consuming the impure food.

Many people believe that food poisoning is a horrible ordeal, but the majority of people have experienced it without realizing it. Due to its short sickness period, it is often confused with stomach flu. In the worst cases, symptoms are very serious and will not go away naturally.

The most common treatment is simply letting it run its course. Hydration is vital, as with any stomach problem. Also, you should try and take diarrhea and nausea medicine if you are able to hold them down. Proper fluid levels are most important things you can control. While it may not feel as though it is helping, continue to drink water and other liquids that will be gentle on your stomach.

If hydration is a problem, you should visit a hospital. At the hospital they will monitor you to make sure you never become too dehydrated and can give you IV fluid if necessary. Also, they may be able to supply you with antibiotics depending on the type of food sickness. In most cases, doctors will allow the body to naturally fight off the illness. After visiting a hospital, follow all doctor orders, including additional appointments.

The easiest way to deal with food poisoning is to avoid it altogether. A few precautions can save you a lot of hassle.

  • After shopping, quickly transport the food home so that it may be placed in the freezer and refrigerator. This is most crucial for meat and dairy products. Your freezer should be set at 0 degrees, with your refrigerator at 40 degrees.
  • Consume or store food within several days. Leaving food sitting out, without proper storage, increases bacteria. Never eat food past expiration.
  • All meat should reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Use a special thermometer, as lower temperatures are much less likely to kill bacteria.
  • Store meat products away from other foods, as meat is generally more susceptible to contamination. Use separate dishes when preparing and always sanitize after finished.
  • Never consume raw food without washing it first. This helps eliminate germs and bacteria.

Preventing food poisoning begins with the knowledge of how it occurs. Store food in the recommended way and use general sanitary practices to help keep your family healthy.
