Skin Health: Dealing with Sunburn

During the summer, many of us spend a great deal of time outdoors. The climate is pleasing, as the weather is warm, without a ton of rain. Many activities exist that are only available during the summer months. While enjoying the weather, we must also protect ourselves from skin damage in the form of sunburn.

While annoying and painful, sunburn can also have permanent effects. It can cause our skin to wrinkle and age, in addition to potentially causing cancer. Taking the proper precautions can not only keep us from dealing with a nuisance but also protect us from future problems.

Sunburn Prevention

  • Staying in the shade and wearing sun protective clothing is the top way to avoid getting burned. Cotton shirts of the long-sleeved and light color variety protect the upper body without making you overheat. A hat with a large brim, possibly straw, will block the neck and face from the sun. A sun umbrella is a good option if you will be in one specific area for an extended period of time.
  • If you must be in the direct sun and do not wish to wear the protective clothing, sunscreen is the best option. SPF 15 or above is adequate for the majority of people, but for babies, young children, elderly, and those with exceptionally fair skin, SPF 30 or above should be used.
  • Waterproof sunscreen in imperative if you will be wet or sweating under the sun. If a type of sunscreen does not specifically say waterproof, sweat and liquid will wash it off. Even if you remain totally dry, it is the safe choice to put on another layer of sunscreen after 8 hours.

Treatment for Sunburn

Many sunburn treatment options are available today. Calamine lotion and hydrocortisone cream are two of the most common solutions. In addition to these, there are a few natural options that are very effective.

  • Aloe vera is perhaps known best for its role in treating sunburn. The majority of stores feature some sort of aloe vera gel or cream. If you’re into gardening, you can maintain your own plant and squeeze the juice out of the leaves.
  • Witch hazel is another excellent option. It can be applied directly or added to water that you soak in, such as a bath. This can be done with vinegar too, but proper dilution is crucial.

Dealing with sunburn is a pain, so preventing it completely is the best choice. Following the remedies listed above can help you recover from slight sunburn more quickly and get back to enjoying the summer. A severe burn, such as one that produces blisters, should be examined by a doctor.
