Leading Causes of Death in Men: Knowing the risks
Most of the leading causes of death in men are fairly predictable; however, there are a few of the true causes which most people will find surprising. Here is a list of the leading causes of death; the great news: You can prevent or at least reduce the risk for these by adopting a healthier lifestyle.
- Heart Disease
More than one in four men will die from heart disease. That is well over 27 percent. Eating foods low in bad fat and cholesterols, regular exercise, weight management, weight management, smoking and drinking less or not at all. - Cancer
No one has to remind us that cancer is a killer. However, most cancers can be controlled and go into remission if detected early enough. Seeing a doctor once a year for a physical exam and a prostrate exam is the best way to detect early cancer - that means the best chance of survival. Also, quitting smoking will greatly reduce the chances of cancer. - Unintentional Injuries
Many men don’t think twice before getting in their car or climbing a ladder. It’s very important to be cautious when doing any dangerous activity, even if it seems common and trivial. - Stroke
This can also be prevented by measures you can take yourself through exercise, diet and finding a doctor to check and treat your high blood pressure. - Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases
While this constitutes a number of diseases, most of them are caused or worsened by smoking. If you are a smoker, there are a variety of new resources and medications available to help you quit. - Diabetes
Diabetes can be a very terrible disease; however it is preventable in many cases. Some people will develop diabetes regardless of their diet and physical activity. But most people can control or prevent diabetes altogether by eating a lower fat, lower sugar diet and getting regular exercise. - Influenza and Pneumonia
Influenza and other respiratory infections are usually just an inconvenienced for young people, however seniors can find it to be devastating. That is why is so very important to get a flue shot every year as you get older. Also you should also go to a doctor if a cough persists more than a few days. - Suicide
Although most thought about suicide is that it is more commonly associated with women, actually men get just as depressed, and are often hesitant to discuss it. One thing to remember is that women attempt suicide more often, but men are more likely to succeed. That’s why it’s important never to overlook the signs of depression and to find your loved ones help if you think there’s a problem. - Kidney Disease
Kidney disease and high blood pressure are the two major causes of kidney disease. You can lower your risk by controlling your weight, avoiding processed sugars, getting regular exercise, and limiting your salt intake. - Alzheimer’s Disease
While this disease gets a lot of attention in the media, it only accounts for 1.6% of deaths in men. While there is currently no cure, there are drugs that can slow the progression if it is caught early. Doctors also think the progression and onset can be slowed by keeping your mind active by reading and doing stimulating activities like crossword puzzles.
While no one can live forever, taking some small steps to live healthier may significantly extend your life.
