Health Living: Dealing with Summer Allergies
For people with allergies, the summer months can be annoying and painful. Allergy sufferers have to deal with rashes, sneezing, itching, coughing, and watery eyes while others are completely enjoying the weather and flowers. Although it is nearly impossible to completely eliminate allergies, there are ways to control the symptoms and have more fun when the temperature heats up.
The best place to reduce symptoms is to stay away from whatever triggers your reaction. Keeping track of your reactions and symptoms can help to pinpoint what you are most allergic to so you can avoid it. While you probably know generally what causes the most problems, you could figure out the specific type of plant and the time of day when it is worst so you can maximize your time outside with the least possible effects. Allergy testing is a good option, even though it is usually rather broad in its findings.
Learn to understand the pollen count and how it applies to you. If pollen is your trigger, certain days will be worse than others. It is not difficult to find the daily pollen count through either internet sites or television. You can plan medication cycles around this or even decide that some days would be better spent inside. Though this won’t reduce the actual allergies, it is a way to manage them.
Instead of opening doors and windows, use the air conditioning to cool down. While your energy bill may be slightly higher for the summer, it will be worth it from the perspective of reduced allergy symptoms. Outside air not only brings in airborne pollen but also deposits pollen all around the house in carpets and furniture.
If it seems as though your medicine is not as effective as it once was, it is probably time to switch to another choice. The majority of people build up tolerance to the medicine, and switching to a different product will help keep the symptoms in check. You can use nasal sprays or other products if the allergies are extremely rough.
If looking for a natural boost to your current medicine, try modifying your diet. Eat foods that contain quercitin and omega-3 acids, as they have been shown to suppress allergies. Also, a more nutritious diet will have benefits in all areas of life.
If all else fails, you could try allergy shots. Each week you are injected with a tiny amount of allergen that will eventually boost your immunity. Little by little, your allergies will be reduced, but the process takes several years to complete, and you will need to continue with allergy medicine until the end. Also, the weekly doctor visits can be a pain.
A few preventative measures can reduce the control allergies have over you.
