Eating Disorders: Are adults affected?

We usually associate eating disorders and malnutrition with children or teens. The media is quick to pick up on this group, but unfortunately, there is another group of folks who suffer from eating problems as well. Senior citizens have similar problems, and although the difficulties come from a different set of motives, they are quite common.

Most seniors are unwilling to let the people who love them know they are having such difficulties. They don’t want to admit to themselves or their families that they are getting too old to take care of themselves.

With this in mind, it’s important to pay close attention to your aging loved ones to be sure they are eating properly. Here are a few reasons why some seniors have eating problems and some of the signs that may indicate such a problem:

Depression and loneliness

Of course, it is a well known fact that depression can lead to weight loss and lack of appetite. Additionally, many seniors don’t have anyone to eat with. If their history involves socializing during meal times or if in the past they had a lot of company in their house but suddenly find themselves alone, it is not surprising that many seniors just won’t eat.

If they do live alone, and you notice this type of behavior, arrange schedules so that someone can be with your senior family member at meal time.

Dental Problems

Chewing is a natural part of life that we have to do in order to eat and swallow properly. Because we do it all our lives, it causes wear and tear to our teeth and jaws. Over time, it can actually become painful to eat and cause chewing difficulties as we get older.

Because of this, there are many senior citizens who don’t eat or can’t eat because it hurts too much. Unfortunately, they are unwilling to consult a doctor and can become very malnourished because of this.

Inability to shop or cook.

It’s easy for physically active people to forget that seniors often have a very difficult time getting to the store, shopping, bringing groceries home and cooking for themselves. Many just can’t walk the distance necessary; perhaps their arthritis makes it impossible to reach for a pot or use a can opener.

The result for many is that they don’t want to impose on their families and friends so they just don’t eat. It’s important to remember that for older people, it is very embarrassing to ask for help.

Medication

Unfortunately, many of the medications that really improve the life of seniors have undesirable side effects. One of these is that it causes seniors to lose their appetites. The other problem is that many of them, both prescribed and over-the-counter, cause them to have an upset stomach which will further deter their appetite.

Money

Unfortunately, many older people on fixed incomes have to make difficult choices when it comes to spending their money. Sometimes, the cost of prescriptions and other necessary living expenses like rent and electricity make it impossible for them to buy food. Sadly, they just can’t afford to eat.
It’s important to keep in mind that not everyone suffering from malnutrition or eating difficulties looks pale or even thin. Unfortunately, unless we see obvious symptoms, we tend to overlook potential problems. Watch for signs of malnutrition - bruising easily, healing poorly or slowly, problems with dentures or decayed teeth.

Talk to your parents and the other seniors in your life on a regular basis so you will be aware of any changes in their health. Also, be aware of the medications they are taking and what the possible side effects are. Accompany them to the doctor’s office when you can so you can keep in step with their medical concerns.

If you feel there may be a problem with their nutrition and eating habits, don’t hesitate to talk to their doctor about it. He or she may have a recommendation - perhaps a medical solution or a referral to an agency that can help.

Although sometimes additional steps may be necessary, one of the most efficient ways to be sure your loved ones are getting enough to eat is to simply eat with them. Go to their house and cook or invite them to your home. Not only will you be bringing the family closer together, but you will also be helping these important loved ones be sure they are eating.
