Why Carbohydrates Can Make You Pack on Pounds!

With body consciousness at an all time high, people will try anything to lose weight. There are many different options available. However, a diet that does not work is one which completely cuts out carbohydrates. The best plan to lose weight includes a balance of all food groups. Eliminating a group is dangerous for your health.

Of all nutrients, none are more common than carbohydrates. Carbs are found in many foods and are made up of basic and compound sugars that the body uses for energy. When the body has enough energy, it stores the excess as fat. Simple carbs are found in dairy products and sugars, with complex carbs existing in more dense food, such as pasta, bread, potatoes, and cereals. Substituting simple carbs for complex ones is an easy way to slim down.

In a diet without carbohydrates, protein and fat become the main source of energy. When the supply of protein runs out, the body gets its energy from muscle tissues. Basically, the body is destroying itself for fuel. This is not good, and the energy the brain needs must come from carbs, not protein.

As a way to help people with weight loss, foods have been rated with a glycemic index (GI), which gives people information about the amount of carbs in the food. A GI above fifty will cause fat storage, while a ranking below fifty will result in the burning of fat.

Diets with a low GI level allow insulin to be steadily maintained. When insulin levels do not fluctuate, your appetite stays more controlled. During exercise, the body burns fat to release energy. Low carb diets are simple and effective ways to lose weight without making your body go through drastic changes.

Eat foods that contain simple carbs, such as vegetables and fruit. Whole grain foods are preferable to those made with standard flour. Nuts and beans complement a low carbohydrate diet well. If craving potatoes, eat sweet potatoes, as they have a lower GI rating.

Eliminating carbs altogether is not a smart solution. Eat less, but maintain a balanced, healthy diet.
