The Diabetes Epidemic: Types of Diabetes Explained

Recently, Type II diabetes has been grabbing news headlines. Many more people are discovering they have diabetes, yet until a doctor explains it, they have no knowledge of it. Being able to differentiate between the two types of diabetes is crucial, as Type II is avoidable, and both are life-threatening if not discovered.

Type I Diabetes

This kind of diabetes is mostly known for being found in children. However, escaping childhood without a diagnosis is no guarantee of your health. It has been discovered in people up to 40 years old. Type I diabetes requires treatment forever, as there is no cure. Your body requires synthetic insulin, as you are no longer able to produce it naturally.

The exact cause is not certain, but scientists hypothesize that it is started by a virus that targets insulin producing cells.

Signs of Type I can include: dizziness, unquenchable thirst, frail feeling, blurry vision, constant urination, and dry mouth. Many symptoms occur quickly, without warning.

Treatment involves constantly monitoring blood sugar and regular insulin injections.

Type II Diabetes

Although mostly found in adults, Type II has been found in children, despite the fact that risk is relatively low with children and increases with age. Usually, children found with Type II diabetes are obese. With Type II, the body produces insulin, but it no longer has an effect.

While it is by no means completely preventable, it is possible to severely reduce the risk for Type II diabetes. It is rare for someone who eats well, exercises regularly, and has a healthy weight to develop this disease.

The symptoms are very similar to Type I but include: itchy skin, pain in legs, and a prolonged healing rate. Also, symptoms develop very slowly, so they might not become noticed until they are serious.

Because insulin is not the problem, the treatment involves a modified diet. It contains lots of complex carbohydrates and high protein. Simple sugars are virtually eliminated. Medication may be a last resort.

Both types of diabetes require correct diagnosis and proper care. If either type is suspected, it is important to promptly see a doctor.
