Health Living, Clean Living: Take a Hike!

Hiking isn’t just for nature lovers. It’s a wonderful form of exercise that can be a great workout while at the same time giving you a chance to spend some time out of doors. Regardless of where you hike, whether it’s up a mountain, or along a state park trail, there are safety concerns you need to be aware of. Here are a few to keep in mind:

  • Insects - It’s important to use an insect repellent to keep all bugs away. There are several types on the market - some use only natural ingredients and are really quite effective. There are also name brand repellents you can purchase.

Before you decide against using repellent, keep in mind that ticks and some insects can spread dangerous diseases. Many spiders are poisonous and bees, especially if you are allergic to them, can make you extremely sick.

  • Supplies - Even if you only plan on a short hike, never assume you won’t need supplies. In the event of an emergency, you’ll be glad you took the extra time and energy to bring them along. Plenty of fresh, clean water is a must. Be sure everyone has his or her own container and fill it up whenever you come to a spot with clean water to do so.

Food is important too. Bring food items that are light in weight, don’t need refrigeration, and if possible, contain protein. Don’t just go for junk food. Dried fruit, granola, and sesame sticks are good for starters.

Also be sure to bring some matches and keep them in a dry spot. Flashlights are invaluable, even if you plan on returning before sunset. First aid supplies are important to have along too.

  • Communication - If at all possible, have some way of communicating with people back at home, or the nearest town. A cell phone is ideal - but keep in mind that in some areas you may find it difficult to get a signal. Walkie-talkies, if available are a good way to communicate, but again, these usually have a limited distance so check first to see how far the signal will travel. If you do find yourself in an emergency situation, use your matches to build a fire and use the smoke to signal where you are located.
  • Don’t hike solo - It’s really not safe to hike alone; especially if you plan on hiking in a remote area or for any distance in areas unfamiliar to you. Any number of things could result in an emergency so it’s important to have someone along.
  • Plan ahead - Once you know where you’re going, map out the area you intend to cover and let someone back home know where you plan to go and how long you’ll be gone. If you aren’t back when you anticipated, they will have good accurate information on where to look for you.
  • Clothing - Bring some extra clothing and rain gear. Extra socks are always important. Even if you’ve checked the weather forecast for your anticipated hike area and it predicts clear skies, keep in mind that storms can appear out of nowhere; especially in the mountains. In the event of bad weather, especially rain, you’ll be really happy you brought them along. Besides, a few extra pounds in your backpack will add to the workout.

Hiking is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy nature while getting a terrific workout. Most important, is being prepared for any situation that may present itself. Take the time to plan your hike and invite others to come along.

Remember, if your hike travels uphill, it will take you twice as long to get there as it will to get back, and vice versa, if the trip takes you downhill, it will take twice as long to get back. Take this important information into consideration when planning departure and return, especially if you plan on returning before sunset.
