What to Wear for a Summer Workout

A summer workout calls for appropriate clothing. There are a number of things to consider when choosing your summer wardrobe. Once you know what type of exercise you’ll be doing, you want to find clothing that will be comfortable, cool, and able to breath. Just as important is choosing items that can protect you from the elements at the same time.

Check out some of these ideas:

  • When you’re picking out exercise clothing, look for items that fit loosely. Not only will they be more comfortable than wearing form fitting clothes, but they will give you more flexibility of movement and they will allow your skin to maintain a light layer of perspiration. Perspiration is the body’s way of cooling itself off, so in turn you’ll feel much cooler, even when there’s no breeze.
  • Lightweight items are a must. Synthetic blended materials that have been designed for wearing during a workout are best. They will draw moisture away from your body so that you can still remain cool, but not sticky.
  • Colors are important - Keep them light and neutral. Darker colored items, including black, tend to absorb light and heat which will make you feel hot and uncomfortable.
  • Take a hat along. Not only will they prevent sunburn by keeping the sun away from your face, but they will keep you a lot cooler. Hats come in such a variety of styles and colors, you’re sure to find one that will suit you. If you really can’t do a hat, choose a visor. Many come with a thin pad that helps to absorb sweat.
  • Shoes are really important. Save your beat up sneakers for running errands and buy a pair of good workout shoes. Not only will they be more comfortable, but they will give your feet the extra support they need as well.
  • Socks should be thick enough to absorb sweat. This will keep your feet much cooler than if you opt for going sockless or for wearing thinner socks in materials like nylon that will remain damp when you sweat causing your feet to feel hot.
  • Longer, lightweight pants will provide more protection from the sun than a pair of shorts. They will also keep insects away from your legs and prevent mosquito and other insect bites.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the summer fashions, especially sleeveless shirts and shorts, it’s important to consider how they will fare during your workout. Wearing the right type of clothing is what will make the difference between getting in a good workout and giving up because it’s too warm. Wearing the wrong clothing can cause sunburn and heat exhaustion in addition to making you feel uncomfortable. Go for function before you go for style.
