The Healing Power of Aromatherapy

Our smell is perhaps one of our most powerful senses. Think about it, you don’t need to see a space to know what it smells like and you don’t need to hear it, either. You probably don’t even need to tough something to be able to identify it by smell. When you smell things it can instantly let you know where you are, or what is near you. Smell often triggers strong emotions, reminds us of experiences long forgotten, and evokes emotions and thoughts easier than words often do. It’s this same power of smell that aromatherapy is built upon.

More About Aromatherapy

It’s important to know that aromatherapy doesn’t just apply to the smells that are in the air. Many people think that the only way to take advantage of aromas is to have them in their air through oils or candles, but this simple isn’t the case. Many people take advantage of this power of smell by using specific essential oils or lotions on the skin. Any time you smell something it has the ability to benefit you positively and this is what aromatherapy is all about.

That being said, those that practice aromatherapy believe that the essential oils that are inhaled into the lungs offer psychological as well as physical benefits. The scent of the oils stimulate the brain and when you breathe in the lungs undergo therapeutic benefits as well. A simple example of this is to inhale eucalyptus essential oil to ease congestion.

If you want to physically apply essential oils to your skin, you should use some caution in doing so. The essential oils can be absorbed into the bloodstream, so it is pertinent that you take care when applying them to the surface of the body. The naturally occurring chemicals in the essential oils can contribute to the health, beauty, and hygiene conditions. Make sure when you do apply the oils to your skin that they are diluted. To apply essential oils to your skin you’ll need to dilute it into a carrier, which is basically cold pressed vegetable oil. Other carrier options are almond oil, apricot kernel oil, and grape seed oil.

Essential oils are not just useful in the air and on the skin; you can also use them around the house! You can use many essential oils in your household cleaners so that you get a clean house that smells great! You can also use certain oils to, such as citronella, to ward off insects, and others to help get stains and scents out of laundry.

As you can see, aromatherapy is not just the scents that you have in the air, they have many different uses and they are very powerful. Each person responds to different scents, different mixtures of essential oils, and different carriers. You’ll need to do a little bit of experimenting if you are just getting into aromatherapy, but you’ll generally find that using essential oils is a lot of fun and different scents can help you relax while others can help energize you. When it comes to the power of aromatherapy, there is something for everyone for every situation!
